Defining ‘green living’ isn’t an easy task as everyone has a different idea of what the term means.  However, most would agree that it involves living a life that does not hurt the planet.  There are easy steps you can take in your everyday life that will help you live green and has minimal negative impact on the environment.

  1. Use sustainable modes of transportation: By walking, running, or biking to your destination you will get exercise and reduce your carbon footprint.  When purchasing a vehicle look for cars with high gas mileage, flex fuel cars, or hybrid cars.
  2. Conserve energy:  Make a conscious effort to turn the lights off when you leave a room, turn down the heat when you’re out of town, take shorter showers, and don’t leave the water running when you’re not using it.  While these may be small acts, they play a large part in conservation.
  3. Use green products:  Stop spreading potentially damaging chemicals throughout your home and yard by using green friendly house and garden products!
  4. Buy local: Buy locally produced foods and products to not only support the local economy but also to cut down on excess packaging and transportation of goods.
  5. Recycle:  This is a step we’ve heard about for years.  Recycle bottles, cans, paper, and food scraps.  Food scraps can be recycled by composting, which can in turn be used in your garden.
  6. Buy used:  When in need of a new item for your home, yard, or business, look first online or within your community for a used product.  Buying used products saves so much energy and is cheaper too!
  7. Commitment:  In order to incorporate the above steps into your lifestyle you must make a commitment to try to live green.  Small incremental changes in our purchasing and lifestyle decisions can make a massive difference if adopted by everyone.
