Solar Water Heater Systems | Print |  E-mail

At its most simple configuration, a solar water heater can be described as a garden hose allowed to lie in the Florida sun for a couple of hours.  The residual water left in the hose is heated to a level that equals the temperature of water coming out of the faucet in the kitchen sink.  From the most primitive to the most sophisticated systems, it’s a tribute to the ingenuity, creativity, and inventiveness of man to view the array of designs available today.......

Home composting saves space in landfills and reduces the amount of methane production. | Print |  E-mail

What is composting?  Most everyone has an idea of what composting is but seems to be  unaware of the ease and benefits of incorporating green practices into their every day life.  Composting is environmentally friendly as well as enriches the soil.

Composting is the decomposing of organic materials such as yard trimmings, food scraps, and wood scraps into humus which is a soil-like end product.  It is created by combining organic wastes in proper ratios with organic bulking agents such as straw, wood chips, and leaves to allow the breakdown of organic materials quickly and efficiently.

Decomposition is aided with the combination of micro and macro-organisms with nitrogen, carbon, moisture, and oxygenCombining materials high in nitrogen with materials high in carbon increases decomposition.  The pile needs moisture from rain or watering to stay damp.  Frequent mixing or turning the pile provides oxygen which speeds up the decomposition.  This process allows the return of nutrients, bacteria, and organic matter back into the soil thus providing nutrients to help plants grow.

The decomposing of organic waste in landfills produces Methane gas, a greenhouse gas, which can contribute to global climate change.  Home composting saves space in landfills and reduces the amount of methane production.  There are a number of environmentally friendly products to help us reduce our carbon footprint.

Compost_1

In simple terms, post compost is decomposed plant matter intended to be used as a fertilizer or way to build up soil quality recycled as a fertilizer and soil amendment. It is a key concept in the organic farming movement. At a basic level composting is simply piling up certain types of waste, usually outdoors, turning it frequently, keeping it moist, and letting it sit for a period of time as it breaks down. In a fashion, this occurs naturally on any forest floor. Modern methods of composting are composed of a multi step process where the decomposition process is monitored with measured amounts of air, water, and nitrogen and carbon rich materials.

Step 1 – Collection and Processing

The collection of recyclable materials differs at the community level.  There are principally for methods for gathering up waste material; drop-off centers, deposit/refund programs, buy-back centers, and of course curbside pickup.

Once these materials arrive at waste management collection center they are usually sent to a recovery facility where they are sorted, oftentimes manually, and bulk packaged into a marketable form for use by processors or manufacturers.  They are bought and sold like any other commodity with demand establishing price levels.
