After the first Smart Bike program implementation in Rennes in 1998 many other cities have jumped on board. These government funded programs allow city goers to navigate the streets with bikes. The bike renting stations are conveniently located throughout the city so one can rent at one station and return at another. Over the first decade only European cities were incorporating Smart Bike. However, in 2008 Washington DC’s government introduced this program as the proud first American city to do so. Other U.S. cities have had bike sharing programs which have been organized by the community; the first being Portland, OR in 1994. It is promising to have the government fund and promote these programs. Smart Bike has been very successful with goals of reducing traffic and pollution, and keeping residents in shape. Between America’s obesity problem and efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, it will be imperative for Smart Bike to pop up all around our country. |
