Living a green friendly life can be as easy as buying locally produced products. Whether its an organic jacket sewn by a local tailor or lettuce grown by a local farmer, buying these products has many advantages for yourself and those around you...
Goods made by local artists often have higher quality and individuality than those manufactured abroad in factories. Foods grown by local farmers haven’t lost their nutritional value and taste on the journey from the farm to your table. By cutting out transportation and packaging our society’s carbon footprint is drastically reduced. When you purchase local goods you are supporting the local economy by pouring money back into community and keeping those jobs alive. By supporting local producers and craftspeople you’ll enhance the economy of your local community, support sustainable production and transportation practices, and live a greener lifestyle. |

At its most simple configuration, a solar water heater can be described as a garden hose allowed to lie in the Florida sun for a couple of hours. The residual water left in the hose is heated to a level that equals the temperature of water coming out of the faucet in the kitchen sink. From the most primitive to the most sophisticated systems, it’s a tribute to the ingenuity, creativity, and inventiveness of man to view the array of designs available today.......

What is composting? Most everyone has an idea of what composting is but seems to be unaware of the ease and benefits of incorporating green practices into their every day life. Composting is environmentally friendly as well as enriches the soil.
Composting is the decomposing of organic materials such as yard trimmings, food scraps, and wood scraps into humus which is a soil-like end product. It is created by combining organic wastes in proper ratios with organic bulking agents such as straw, wood chips, and leaves to allow the breakdown of organic materials quickly and efficiently.
Decomposition is aided with the combination of micro and macro-organisms with nitrogen, carbon, moisture, and oxygen. Combining materials high in nitrogen with materials high in carbon increases decomposition. The pile needs moisture from rain or watering to stay damp. Frequent mixing or turning the pile provides oxygen which speeds up the decomposition. This process allows the return of nutrients, bacteria, and organic matter back into the soil thus providing nutrients to help plants grow.
The decomposing of organic waste in landfills produces Methane gas, a greenhouse gas, which can contribute to global climate change. Home composting saves space in landfills and reduces the amount of methane production. There are a number of environmentally friendly products to help us reduce our carbon footprint. |
